Our office hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. We recommend you speak first with your physician to see if it is indeed appropriate for your problem to be evaluated by a neurosurgeon. Many problems can be easily diagnosed and treated by your primary physician, with neurosurgical evaluation and treatment reserved for only a small subset of patients. In addition, some insurance plans will only allow you to see certain physicians designated by your plan, and sometimes, only with a referral from your physician. You will be asked this information when you call, and also asked whether the reason for your visit is related to a Labor and Industries claim, or an accident with pending litigation. Dr. Young takes no referrals from attorneys, and our office does not perform physical capacities exams (PCE).
Once you have made an appointment, please try to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time to fill out the necessary paperwork. It is always a good idea to call ahead to see if the physician you are scheduled to see is on time.
You will need your insurance information and card on your visit, as part of the demographic information for our files. It is also a good idea to bring with you a list of any medications you are on, including any non-prescription items you may take regularly, and a list of current medical problems.
If your problem has been previously evaluated radiographically, it is important that we have these studies (CT, MRI, Myelography) during your evaluation. They will help us decide not only if surgery is necessary, but how it might best be done. They are also excellent teaching aids for the physician to help you understand the nature of your problem, and the surgery that may be required. Normally, the referring physician will make arrangements to send these to us, but it is a good idea for you to check to see that this has been done. Even better, if you can hand-carry your studies with you, then we will be assured of having them here for your evaluation. This may mean returning to the facility where the study was performed, and bringing them with you. These studies are legally yours, and this is, in fact, the safest way of getting the studies to our office.
If you have had prior surgery relating to your problem, it is also helpful if you can obtain a copy of your operative report for our review, as well as any older studies that may have led up to your surgery.
Finally, please understand that neurosurgery is not specialty that has the luxury of a rigid daily schedule. Emergencies occur that interfere with our desire to provide you with timely attention, and it is sometimes necessary to change appointments to accommodate these emergencies and the aggravating, but unavoidable fluidity of the operating room schedule. We will do everything in our power to keep this to a minimum, but it is sometimes necessary to reschedule patients, even at the last minute. When this occurs, we will do everything possible to accommodate your schedule and see you as soon as possible.
